As mentioned in the previous article, Thailand is located in the heart of Southeast Asia. Its strategic location not only enhances its own economic prospects but also serves as a crucial transit point for goods moving to and from neighboring countries. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, Thailand's role as a hub for trade has never been more significant. One of the most vital transit routes is from Thailand to Laos. In this article, we will delve into the process of cross-border trade between Thailand and Laos.

Study Case

A shipment currently in transit through Thailand is destined for Laos. After the cargo arrives at Laem Chabang Port, the broker agent will submit the customs entry (transit) and handle the customs clearance for this transit shipment at Laem Chabang Port. Afterward, the trucking company will pick up and move the container to the Thai border called Nong Khai. Customs clearance will be done at both Thai and Laos customs. After customs clearance in Thai customs is completed, the truck will cross the bridge known as the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge to enter Laos. The broker agent in Laos will also handle customs clearance, and the cargo will proceed to the Laos border at Thana Leng. The cargo will then enter a nearby warehouse and await the importer to complete the import clearance.

In accordance with Lao PDR Customs Law, importers and exporters must prepare import and export declarations, complete customs clearance including payment of import duties and VAT, and provide a valid import license for controlled goods. Thereafter, the goods can be transported by truck across the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge .

The transit of goods from Thailand to Laos exemplifies the efficiency and strategic importance of Thailand’s position in regional trade. Through streamlined customs procedures and ongoing bilateral cooperation, the journey from Thailand to Laos is becoming increasingly seamless. However, this whole journey requires professional knowledge and experience, therefore, it is important for you to consult with a reliable logistics consultant.
