Severe congestion in South Africa’s ports

In recent times, the shipping industry in South Africa has found itself grappling with a mounting challenge—port congestion. This issue has become a cause for concern as the country's ports struggle to cope with the surge in cargo volume against the backdrop of limited capacity. The repercussions of this congestion are far-reaching, affecting not only shipping companies but also importers and exporters, leading to significant delays and increased costs.

It has been warned by Transnet that clearing the backlog at the Durban cargo port will take until 2024. With over 60 vessels reportedly queued offshore, the situation has escalated to a point where importers are now anticipating delays that could impact the timely arrival of merchandise for the upcoming holiday season.

The offload cargo delays could take up to 14-15 days long. As of last week, over 70,000 shipping containers were trapped on ships off the coast of Durban alone. Due to the severity of port congestion in South Africa, Maersk announced the omission of Durban in the vessel schedule. In addition, shipping lines like Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM start to impose a congestion fee. These fees are intended to help cover the additional costs incurred due to delays, operational challenges, and increased complexities in the movement of goods.

The surcharge is not just a matter of concern for the shipping industry; its repercussions extend to South African consumers. As shipping companies pass on these additional costs to importers and exporters, the inevitable outcome is a potential spike in the prices of imported goods. This is particularly significant for a country that relies heavily on imports to meet consumer demand for various products, ranging from electronics to household goods and beyond.

Unfavorable weather has hindered efficient cargo handling and vessel movements, and poor equipment exacerbates the situation. Recognizing the need for infrastructure upgrades, Transnet is actively pursuing private-sector partnerships. SAAFF also emphasized the importance of unity among all stakeholders in the country. The modernization of infrastructure holds the potential to catalyze positive economic growth trends in South Africa.
